Alongside working in the television and film industry for over 20 years as a wardrobe stylist and markup artist, New Zealander Margaret Petchell has always expressed her creativity on canvas - her passion for beauty, colour and detail inspiring grand scale paintings of women, flowers and most recently, of birds.
Her 2013 exhibition 'The Commoners' is a series of fifteen large format portraits of native birds painted from the chest up - as if they were sitting for a studio portrait. Each bird is staring at the viewer, puffed up and dignified and seemingly with their own personality. Just a handful of these portraits have been released as limited edition fine art prints, including this fabulous print of a sparrow called 'Bijou'.
